 Biogas

Biogas is generated from bacteria in the process of degradation of organic material under anaerobic conditions. This process creates methane that can be captured and used to either run thermal appliances (cooking, heat) or to create electricity by feeding the methane to generators.

One of the advantages of biogas lies in the fact that it can be created from a wide variety of biomass. These can range from energy crops, crop refuse and waste. The use of waste such as manure and kitchen waste to create energy is an aspect that makes biogas especially relevant in the context of Rural India. Bio-methanation is a much more efficient process at converting all the potential energy in a given biomass into a usable form of energy.

On a small scale biogas can be used to provide for the cooking requirements of a few households. Medium sized plants can be used to create gas as well as electricity for local/institutional requirements whereas larger scaled plants can be used to produce electricity to sell to the grid.

Gram Oorja has incubated Shashwat Oorja which has set up various size plants in Karnataka and Maharashtra and is currently working on large scale commercial plants in other parts.
